Benefits of Mommy Makeover Surgery
Childbearing can result in lax abdominal skin with stretch marks and weakness of the abdominal muscles. This can cause the appearance of a lower abdominal pooch and a widened waist. Breast engorgement caused by pregnancy and subsequent breast-feeding can result in volume loss (particularly in the upper breast), stretch marks, and droop or sagging of the breasts. There may also be stubborn fat deposits in the waist, hips, and thighs. Diet and exercise may help with fat loss, but are not effective in tightening loose skin or improving the laxity of the abdominal muscles.
Because every woman is unique, Dr. Steele is a mommy makeover plastic surgeon who will take the time to listen to your needs and goals and will work with you to design a combination of procedures to give you the optimal outcome.
The following procedures are often combined in a Mommy Makeover plastic surgery procedure:
Designed to improve abdominal contour by tightening the lax abdominal muscles and removing excess, stretched-out skin.
Restores a firm, lifted, more youthful shape.
Designed to restore pre-pregnancy breast size/fullness, or give you the fullness and size that you’ve always wanted.
Mommy Makeover Surgery
Recovery time will vary depending on the procedures performed. Many patients can go home the same day, but in cases of longer mommy makeover surgery or patients with underlying medical issues, an overnight stay may be required. Patients can generally return to work in 10-14 days. The abdomen will be quite tight for the first 1-2 weeks and the patient will generally be bent at the waist for 7-10 days. Several days after surgery, Dr. Steele will place you into a compression garment. Your breasts will be mildly sore and tight as well. After 5-7 days, Dr. Steele will recommend a specific underwire sports bra to aid in your healing.
It is important to get up and walk early to minimize the risk of blood clots. Cardio activity can be resumed at 4 weeks, with increased lifting activity (>10-15 pounds) at 6 weeks. Dr. Steele advises the patient to avoid vigorous core (planks, crunches, etc.) and chest (pushups, barbells) workouts for at least 2 months. Dr. Steele will provide optimal scar care instructions (downloadable scar care form) to give you the finest scar possible.
What is done for the breast during a Mommy Makeover Surgery? In some cases, a breast augmentation alone is adequate to restore volume loss after pregnancy. Some women may be happy with a breast lift alone to reshape and elevate the breast higher onto the chest. In many cases, a combination breast lift with implant is performed to provide the best of both worlds: a fuller breast that is shapelier and sits higher on the chest.
What is done for the tummy in a Mommy Makeover cosmetic surgery package? In most cases, a full tummy tuck is required. This will allow Dr. Steele to tighten the abdominal wall muscles and remove as many stretch marks and excess skin as possible. This is often combined with flank liposuction to improve the waist contour.
Am I a candidate for a Mommy Makeover? If you are done having children and are close to your pre-pregnancy or ideal body weight, then you may be an excellent candidate for this procedure. Additionally, you should be in good health and a non-smoker.
Is it safe to combine these procedures? There are always risks involved with surgery, however, with today’s modern anesthesia, the risk is very minimal in healthy patients. Medical problems such as asthma, high blood pressure, and diabetes may increase your surgical risk and may require a preoperative medical evaluation to gauge suitability for this longer, elective procedure. If prudent, Dr. Steele will recommend that you spend a night in the hospital to monitor your vital signs and fluid intake/output.
What if I get pregnant again after my Mommy Makeover surgery?Ideally, you would wait to have a mommy makeover until after all pregnancies are complete. In the event of future pregnancies, you may suffer more stretching or sagging of the skin. A later revision surgery may be necessary to correct this.
Where will I have scars from my Mommy Makeover surgery? The length and extent of scars will depend on each individual patient and the procedures she chooses. Generally, there will be a tummy tuck scar from hip to hip and some sort of breast incision. Dr. Steele takes the time to make sure that your scars are as fine as possible and will recommend postoperative scar care for optimal healing. Most women are so pleased with their new contours that they feel the results after a Mommy Makeover cosmetic surgery package far outweigh any scarring left behind.
What about stretch marks?Generally, an abdominoplasty will remove all stretch marks below the belly button. Patients with upper abdominal stretch marks will get some improvement- they will be moved lower down on the abdomen and will be tighter, which helps diminish the appearance. Stretch marks in the upper breast cannot be excised, however, the placement of an implant makes them less noticeable by placing tension and stretch on the skin.
