What is Botox® Cosmetic
and how does it work?
Botox® (onabotulinumtoxin-A) is derived from bacteria that cause botulism. It is highly purified and safe to use in very small doses when injected around and into the facial muscles.
Normal facial movements such as smiling, blinking, talking, and raising our eyebrows cause skin winkles with each movement. Over time, these wrinkles become deeper and more prominent. Botox® works by temporarily paralyzing these muscles and eliminating the active lines, and in many cases the resting lines as well.
Benefits of Botox® include the following:
- Decreased horizontal forehead furrows or creases
- Decreased frown lines or “parenthesis lines” between the eyebrows
- Diminished crow’s feet around the eyes
- Minimal treatment time and downtime
Botox® injections are not a “one size fits all” technique. Dr. Steele takes the time to assess your individual anatomy and goals in order to customize a plan that is right for you. He uses the latest, advanced injection techniques to create a youthful, relaxed appearance that avoids an unnatural, frozen expression.
During your first injection with Dr. Steele, he will explain that it is better to use too little Botox® Cosmetic if there is any question about how much to inject. This avoids complications such as an eyebrow that drops, a droopy eyelid, or frozen appearance. After 10-14 days, he will revisit with you to see if any “touch up” injections are needed for optimal improvement.
Immediately after your injection, you may notice some slight swelling that will resolve very quickly. There is some occasional bruising associated with injections as well. Ice packs can be helpful during the first 24 hours. You should avoid lying down right after an injection and avoid strenuous activity for the remainder of the day.
Time to see results from Botox® varies somewhat between patients but is usually between 3-7 days. By 10-14 days, you should notice full effect and can decide if a touch up appointment is needed. Botox will last around 3-4 months in most patients.

There are a variety of dermal fillers available to correct fine to deep lines around the nose, middle face, and mouth. There are also fillers designed to be placed deeper in the face to improve shape and volume that has been lost due to aging. Fillers often work in synergy with Botox® injections for optimal rejuvenation.
What Are the Types of Fillers
and How Do They Work?
Because there are so many options available, Dr. Steele will take time at your first appointment to discuss your desires and goals. After a thorough exam of your anatomy, he will develop a customized plan using the latest, advanced injection techniques and the best fillers for each patient and anatomic location.
Dr. Steele offers the following injectable dermal fillers:
The Juvéderm® family of products includes Juvéderm® Ultra, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus, and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC. They are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers that work by attracting water to plump up wrinkles and folds. The Juvéderm® family is FDA approved for use in correction of wrinkles and lines around the mouth and for lip augmentation. Results typically last 8-12 months.

Juvéderm® Voluma XC
Volbella is a recently FDA approved version of Juvéderm® designed to be used for fine lines around the mouth and for augmentation of the lips. Longevity is up to one year.
The Restylane® family are also HA products and include Restylane®, Restylane®-L, Restylane® Silk, Restylane® Refyne/Defyne, and Restylane®-Lyft. They also work by attracting water to plump up the skin. Restylane®, Restylane®-L, and Restylane® Refyne/Defyne are designed for wrinkles and folds around the mouth. Restylane® Silk is used for fine lines around the mouth and lip augmentation. Restylane®-Lyft is designed to provide long lasting volume in cheeks.

Radiesse® is derived from mineral compounds similar to those found in our bones. Longevity is longer than the HA fillers and this material may stimulate production of collagen. It should only be used in deep locations, however.
Sculptra® works much differently than the fillers noted above. It is derived from materials used in some absorbable sutures. Sculptra® works by stimulating your body’s own collagen. It requires several treatments staged about 6 weeks apart. The results, however, are semi-permanent and are still seen 2 years after injection.

Dermal fillers are great products for fending of signs of aging and reversing those that have already appeared. Benefits include:
- Smoothing deep facial wrinkles
- Plumping and sculpting lips
- Replacing volume lost in the cheeks and temples
- Reducing superficial scars
- Reducing fine lines around the lips and other locations
- Can be used to camouflage early jowling and peri-oral aging
- Provide immediate results with minimal treatment and downtime
Dermal Filler Injection
After your initial consultation, Dr. Steele will formulate a customized treatment plan using the appropriate filers to obtain your goals. At your next visit, Dr. Steele will ask you to arrive 15 minutes early to apply topical numbing cream and make any necessary anatomic markings. The injections will take between 20-45 minutes depending on the areas treated.
After your treatment, an ice pack will be provided and should be used for 24-48 hours to help with bruising and swelling. You should avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after your injection. Occasional bruising does occur and can be camouflaged with makeup.
Kybella® is an FDA approved injectable medication designed to reduce fullness under the chin. Many men and women complain about submental fat, or a double chin. Kybella® allows many patients to avoid surgery such as liposuction to improve their chin contour. Kybella® works by destroying fat cells in the areas injected. Several injections are performed at one time and 2-3 sessions are required for optimal improvement. How often can I come back for treatments?Botox® will last 3-4 months in most patients. You can get regular injections without fear of cumulative effects. The hyaluronic acid fillers will typically last 8-12 months, however the deeper formulations (Voluma and Restylane®-Lyft) can last up to 2 years. Sculptra® also has been shown to have long-term results up to at least 25 months.
Are these products safe?Although Botox® was derived from a very dangerous protein, it is highly purified and safe to use in the small muscles of the face. The safety of Botox® has been well documented over the last 20-30 years. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in our skin, so the HA fillers are very compatible with very little chance of an allergic type reaction.
How do I know which product is best for me?Many patients are confused about the best injectable for them. It is easy to understand why; there are so many products to choose from. Dr. Steele will perform a complete facial analysis to develop a customized treatment plan for optimal rejuvenation. Patients who have fine lines around the forehead, brows, and eyelids will generally benefit from Botox®. Lines around the mouth and lips will respond to hyaluronic acid fillers. As noted above, there are a variety of volumizing agents available to improve fullness in the cheeks and middle face.
What’s the best age to start injection?Anyone over the age of 18 can receive injectable treatments, but the most common ages are between 30-55. This is when many people start to notice signs of aging such as wrinkles and folds.
